Do not feel bad if you were burned by a fraudulent contractor. Believe it or not, you are in good company — many of your South Central Louisiana neighbors have been scammed in the same way.

According to the local chapter of the BBB, via the West Side Journal over in Port Allen, contractor fraud is the biggest scamming problem in the region aside from phone scams. At the office of Dale M. Maas, Attorney at Law, we believe that anyone who takes advantage of those in need deserves to pay back what they have taken — in full.

If your life was thrown into chaos by disastrous damage to your home, it is no wonder that you reached out to someone to help with the repairs. You may have been in a hurry to create a healthy living environment for your children. You may have had work, family or other issues that you had to the four spending hours and hours searching through contractors’ advertisements and calling people who seem like they were too busy to take your job.

Unfortunately, when you research fraudulent contractors, you are more likely to come up with ways to prevent the problem then with solutions for if it has already happened to you. At our law office, we are not here to lecture people. We are here to support, advise and represent our clients during a confusing and hectic time in their lives. We are here to make sure that the people who prey on the misfortune of others are pursued to the greatest extent possible under Louisiana law.

Contractor scams are, unfortunately, a fact of life here in the Baton Rouge area. The periodic heavy weather we get makes the city a constant source of potential targets for these increasingly sophisticated attacks. You do not need to feel bad if you fell victim to one of these unscrupulous or fraudulent predators, but you may want to consider taking every action possible to reclaim what is yours.
